Help shape the next study.

The eight-player elite cohort on this site was the first cut. The next phase opens up the protocol to a much wider pool, and we're building a tool to make that possible.

What we're building

A guided self-think-aloud tool. Think of it as a lightweight extension or desktop app that walks a player through recording their own think-aloud sessions while they play, with the same temporal-cell and parent-category coding framework used in this study, applied automatically. The tool prompts when to start, when to pause, and (gently) when verbalisation drifts off-task, so the recording matches the protocol's standards without a researcher in the room.

Today the pipeline behind this site needs a researcher with headphones and a transcript. The new tool will collapse most of that work into a single click for the player and a clean, anonymised dataset for the researcher.

Already running alongside this: a follow-up study extending the cohort to novice and sub-elite players. Currently in data analysis, with first results expected mid-May 2026 — the first elite-vs-novice comparison sitting on the same coding framework. Sub-elite participants are exactly who we're looking to recruit through the form below.

What contributing looks like

We'll email you when the tool is ready for early access. From there, contributing means:

  • Installing the tool (a small extension or app).
  • Recording a single match's worth of think-aloud audio while you play your usual game.
  • Reviewing the auto-coded output and correcting anything that feels wrong before submission.

That's the minimum. Heavier contributors can take part in longitudinal tracking or coaching-feedback experiments.

What you get

  • Your own private cognition profile (what this site shows for the elite cohort, but for you).
  • Comparison against the elite baseline if you want it.
  • Early access to whatever the tool becomes.

Register interest

Drop your email below. We'll only contact you about this study and the tool, never anything else.

How do you feel about thinking aloud while you play?
